In 2015 I worked across London and Singapore to completely redesign Credit Suisse's digital private banking offering - providing intelligent, on-demand banking to high net worth individuals. Over 12 months, our team would incrementally design and build the app for an APAC launch on iOS.

Our cross-functional teams worked directly in Credit Suisse, building an embedded product squad within their business. I led two squads focussed on in-app navigation and global design systems.

The apps feature set was vast and pulled from over 100 data sources. One of my keys tasks was to organize and design an effective system to support continual growth and make the app easier to navigate. After extensive user testing, we learned that users preferred a wide app structure, allowing 5 top-level destinations to be easily accessed.

Each destination was structured around a key task to be done. We then organized sub-sections underneath based on card sorting exercises and industry expectations. The new system tested incredibly well among users and drastically reduced the learning curve associated with the app.

The large portion of user feedback within the app was the login experience. Users repeatably expressed that the app took too long to log in, specifically highlighting the 2-factor authentication process. Limitations around security meant the full log in time couldn't be reduced, but this insight led to the conception of a new feature called 'account glance'.

Limitations around security meant a full log in time couldn't be reduced, but this insight led to the conception of a new feature called 'account glance'.

Account glance would provide users with a masked view of their account health after only one layer of authentication, allowing users to login in seconds to see a simple percentage view of their account health. Users could then complete the full login process with 2FA to access the full app experience. The new feature performed well when released and largely removed negative feedback around the login experience.

Optimizing for global collaboration

My team developed standards across all of the elements from foundational principles to common components. The design library allowed our team of 40+ designers across 2 offices in London and Singapore to easily collaborate and create without creating disjointed experiences for the user. From the start, we wanted to create a platform that other people could use, build upon, and extend internally. Building an entirely new product and a design system at the same time was a challenge, but one I loved at this scale.
